A dream night for Fenerbahce/Ulker

A dream night for Fenerbahce/Ulker

By Rigas Dardalis/ dardalis@eurohoops.net

History was made in Istanbul on Friday night. The Celtics lost for the first time in their history outside the borders of USA and the honor of this feat belongs to Fenerbahce/ Ulker. The final score was 97-91 after a big three point shot by the game’s top scorer Romain Sato (24 p.) and an impressive second half performance by Bo McCalebb (21 p.).

It was the first preseason game for the Celtics, but also the fourth game in four nights for Fener after three matches for the Turkish cup. Coach Doc Rivers wanted to give time to his second unit and protect his starters. He did just that, but in the process, Fener prevailed. Jeff Green and Jared Sullinger got their opportunity and scored 16 points, however they were not enough. Kevin Garnett played for just 15 minutes, Paul Pierce for 26 and Rajon Rondo in 30 minutes had 13 points and 9 assists. None of them was on the court in the closing minutes.

So, the night belonged to Fenerbahce/ Ulker, a team with a new roster, full of experienced Euroleague players which on paper is one of the favorites to participate in this season’s Final Four. Judging from their win, they seem to be on the right path.

Olympiacos CSKA Real Madrid Those are the favorites for the Euroleague Final Four. Fener is in the second class of teams like Barca, Milano, Efes, Panathinaikos, etc. Teams that are all just fighting for the final four. But definitely not "one of the favorites".
