PAOK held a press conference on Tuesday in order to clarify the Donnie McGrath affair. The team seems ready to file a complain in FIBA against the player, however things may not play out this way.
McGrath left without being paid his last monthly salary by the team, but PAOK put the money in his bank account the same day he decided to travel to Kaunas. So, the situation is really tricky but, because the player wants to play for Zalgiris, it’s probable that he will not touch the money PAOK transferred to his account in order to prove that he was really unpaid, so according to FIBA rules he had the right to break his contract.
However this process needs time, a luxury that neither side has, and a financial compromise between every party involved should be considered at least a possibility. Still, the decision of Donnie McGrath to join financially unstable Zalgiris can be considered questionable, despite the fact that he will be eligible to play in Euroleague, if the situation is resolved before the 20th of February.
