Rudy was hit in Kaunas, road wins for all

By Aris Barkas/ barkas@eurohoops.net

A night that should belonged to basketball, was overshadowed by an unprecedented incident. After the game of Zalgiris Kaunas vs Real Madrid a fan of the home team, according to a report by Lithuanian journalist Sarunas Mazalas, punched Rudy Fernandez (photo) in the face as he was heading to his team bus due to his behaviour in the first game between the two teams. He was then rushed to the airport with blood all over his face. The offender and his brother were arrested and here’s what happened on the court.

  • In Piraeus, Barcelona saved the best for last and with a partial score of 27-15 in the last quarter prevailed over defending champions Olympiacos (90-77). Erazem Lorbek with 21 points and Pete Mickeal with 20 points were the top scorers of the winners, Ferbuary MVP Ante Tomic was impressive in the first half, while Olympiacos managed to tie the score in the last minute of the third quarter (62-62), but couldn’t finish the game with the same efficiency on both ends of the floor.
  • In Kaunas, Zalgiris fought until the bitter end but it was the night of Nicola Mirotic who had 31 points with 18/18 FT (tied the Euroleague record) and 11 rebounds. He was the main reason of Real Madrid’s overtime win by a point (105-104) The Lithuanians had the chance to win the game in the end of the regulation (84-84) as they had 3 seconds for a final shot, Marko Popovic took the responsibility, but missed it.
  • Ιn Istanbul the team that really needed the win, got it. Maccabi Tel Aviv prevailed over Fenerbahce/ Ulker (94-85) after getting a 9 point difference in the second quarter which lasted until the end. Five players from the winners scored in double digits, while the hosts for one more game didn’t exhibit any kind of desire in defense. On the contrary Bodganovic had one more big offensive game with 26 points.

Fernandez is always using dirty antics in games in Europe for years. In EuroBasket with Spain he always does it. Flopping like crazy, pretending to be injured, acting like he got hurt, etc. Never has he been fined or punished by FIBA or Euroleague for these types of things, or by the ACB either as far as I know. That's REALLY the problem here. By allowing him to act like that all these years and get away with it - that's really what led to this happening.

LMAO Flopping, Kobe does flopping, Jasikevicius does flopping...¿are you a hooligan? Spain won the Eurocup, Spain played almost all the finals the last years. It's called ENVY.

I dont disagree. But undortunately common sence is not something you can rely on. Whether it be Rudy, Batum, Krstic, Boutousis or Batiste, if Euroleague, Fiba etc dont act like serious organisations then the actions of the players will have reactions outside the gym. Sadly.

I'm not relying on it my friend. All what have happened with Rudy, Krstic, Bouroussis or Batiste was between sportsmen, not fans and supporters involved. I know that Rudy provoke and acts like a cheater sometimes, he payed a fine to Euroleague as punishment and also apologyzed to Jankunas a Lavrinovic. It's OK the supporters insulting and whistling to him. But a supporter or a fan puching him is something totally unacceptable. Just imagine if it was a psycho fan with a knife, it could end in a tragedy. Zalgiris security failed...

Don't open your mouth, if you are not familiar with details. It wasn't Zalgiris security who failed, it was security from Russia hired by Real, the incident took place outside arena. You are spanish, aren't you? Rudy's relative perhaps.

@hate diletants. I open my mouth when I want, it's called freedom of speech. Do you know what is that? lmao so we've to hire security because Lithuanian ones fails everytime we visit Kaunas? come on! Yes I'm spanish and Real Madrid supporter, any problem? will you try to punch me too? Dang man, many questions but I don't see self-criticism. Maybe they're proud about their behaviour.

Pulling down Tony Parker by his neck, with a possibility of a serious injury is not a child's act. Rudy should have been punished many times and wasnt. What happened yesterday is not acceptable but thats what happens sooner or later when official federations and organisations dont take any action. Personally for me they are the only one to blame.

I do remember Batum hiting Navarro and no one punished him either. Those are things that should end into the pavillion between sportsmen. What could happen if those hooligans have had a knife like happened to Monica Seles? So if you provoke someone and they kick your ass it's your fault? it's about education and common sense.

I cant justify actions of Zalgiris fans, but Rudy deserved it. P.Ss please learn name of the team before you comment...

Rudy deserved it? hope you come to Spain, you deserved one to. And I say the name in my lenguage, I'm not from lietuva.

Paulius Jankūnas: its terrible what those twins did to Rudy Fernandez. Now it is big shame for all Lithuania. Well said Jankunas, Rudy paid yet. @greenwhite sorry but an attack is something injustifiable, you can't compare the childish action of Rudy throwing the ball to Lavrinovic and pushing Jankunas with an attack from 2 hooligans and what happened into the zalgirio arena.

You're right, it's unacceptable and shameful, but Rudy crossed the line. He had been provoking everyone and acting like like this for WAY too long and he's overfilled Lithuanians' cup of patience. Therefore, Rudy had it coming.

Rudy crossed the line? the violence is the only line. Hope that if you provoke someone and you end in the hospital after a beating you say the same. Don't mix patience with violence and bad education please.

Pathetic Zalguiris supporters inciting to violence. What a gang. I hope this website run a campaign against Zalguiris for that actions like you did with Rudy when he acted like a child. Euroleague should punish Zalguiris for that.
