From Las Vegas to Spain 2014

By Rigas Dardalis/ dardalis@eurohoops.net

He is just 19 years old, but that doesn’t mean that he has to “burn”. That’s why Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Greek federation and Milwaukee Bucks agreed in a formula that seems to be a win-win situation for every one involved.

The Greek forward will not be a member of the Greek U20 national team in the upcoming Eurobasket, which will be held at the island of Crete between 8 and 20 of July, in order to play in the Las Vegas Summer League with the Bucks at the 11th of July.

After that, the “Greek freak” will return to Greece and will take part in the training camp of the senior Greek national team which will compete in the upcoming FIBA World Cup in Spain. Antetokounmpo will have to fight for a place in the final roster and his performance during the camp, which will be held at Karpenisi, Greece, will decide his fate.

Giannis is also a member of the Greek U20 team and Eurobasket U20 is organized in Greece this summer. So the possibility of him playing in that tournament instead of the Summer league was discussed in earlier meetings

I bet he will be in the Greek team. The main target is to have a different role in the Bucks from this season and on

He won’t make the Greek team unless,

      1. They have several key absences or,
      2. They put him on the team as a 10-12 man to get experience and he only plays against weak teams, or only plays limited minutes, or in garbage time, etc.

Greece is loaded, especially they are absolutely loaded at small forward with Perperoglou, Papanikolaou, his brother Thanasis (whom is more ready as a player than he is), Bramos (who in a 10-12 man role would be more useful than him), Papapetrou (who is also better than him even at this point in time), etc.

At shooting guard, where he could possibly also play (although not ideally, because he is not good enough at that position on defense), that is where they have guys in the guard rotation like Spanoulis and Zisis, which are the leaders of the national team (and no NBA only fans should get any delusions of grandeur with Giannis, because the new coach of the team already confirmed they will stay as such), plus you also have Calathes, Mantzaris, Sloukas, etc. Hell, even someone like Pappas is more ready and better right now and would have had much better stats in a team like the Bucks than Giannis did.

So, in all honesty, he really should not make the team, but if he does, it will just be as preparation for the future, and he’s going to be sitting on the bench for most of the tournament, other than in just certain situations.

But if Greece is really serious about getting a medal at such a big tournament, they need the absolute 12 best players, and he’s really not one of them. There are a lot of Greek players that would have been much better on the Bucks, even the star of the Bucks team.

you are a Giannis Hater right, everybody is better than him LOL

It’s true, Greece is loaded. Aside from USA and Spain, they could be the best team out there (top 3-4) if they play with a full roster. They haven’t done that for a while now. Very hard for Giannis to be selected in the final roster. Unless there are many absentees.

This was the right decision. He has to improve his game and also represent his country at the upcoming world cup

Let’s go Gianni!! The future belongs to You! #Hope

Hair-raising to the final whistle!
