Barcelona ended Real Madrid’s winning streak in the Spanish Cup and marked its 24th title on Sunday.
It was a bumpy season for the Barca so far.
They underachieved in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague as they didn’t qualify for the Playoffs again after missing it last year. Coach Sito Alonso paid the price as he was fired. Barcelona’s board didn’t search too long as they brought back the legendary Svetislav Pesic.
The Serbian coach won the last Copa del Rey with Barcelona back in 2003 and also won Spanish League and Euroleague. It was the first Euroleague title for Barcelona. It was clear that Pesic and Barcelona are the right fit.
“Whenever Barcelona doesn’t play good people starting to ask me if I am coming back. I was on the holiday in Austria when they called me. I took the first flight to Barcelona and came.”, said Pesic as mentioned on Mondo .
“We won all the three games in the Copa del Rey and I want to thank the people in the club who believed in me as a coach and as a person“, added Pesic.
“This team has a big potential. We already showed it. This team can play modern basketball with good defense. A coach can improve the team if he has players who are willing to step up and take responsibility. When I took over the team players were ready for a change and they gave their best“.
Barcelona is out of the playoff race in the Euroleague, but they are standing on a 13-7 record in the Spanish ACB League. The next step for coach Pesic and Barcelona is to win the Spanish league.
“I am happy that we won the Cup and I am happy with our roster. The club believes in me and that gives me the motivation to work. Our next mission is to fight for the title in ACB“, finished Pesic.
