El Khatib, who retired from the national team following the FIBA Asia Cup 2017 but is still playing for Lebanese side Champville, looks forward to doing his part in serving the best interest of players and the sport worldwide.

“It’s a pleasure to be working with FIBA, to be a part of this commission to help players and develop the sport around the world,” he said. “I’ve been on the basketball scene for the past 20 plus years and this appointment is a huge step.”

Like El Khatib, Papamakarios is still very much making his presence felt on the basketball courts, playing for Greek side Gymnastikos S. Larissas.

The 6ft 3in (1.92m) guard represented Greece in youth teams (U18, U19 and U20 levels) and went on to feature for the senior side. Over the course of his professional career, the former captain of Olympiacos has gathered ample experience in European club competitions as well as in the Greek and Spanish leagues.

His appointment to the Players’ Commission is a logical move for the 37-year-old, who has served as both President and Vice-President of the Players’ Association in Greece.

He brings needed European experience to the commission since member Thomas Van den Spiegel is on special leave of absence as President of ULEB.

“It’s a great honor to be in the FIBA Players’ Commission, especially when I look at all the names of the members already on it. I will do my best to improve the conditions of basketball and basketball players with all of my efforts and all my strength,” he noted.
