Panathinaikos was defeated 81 – 82 last night by Olympiacos in Game 4 of the Greek Basket League finals, subsequently losing the championship with a 3-1 record in the title series.

Club owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos released a statement, taking a full responsibility of Panathinaikos‘ course in the season and failure to win the desired titles.

Here it is:

“Everyone wants to benefit or take advantage from a success. On the other hand, failure is a lonely case. As owner of the club I take full responsibility for the loss of our basic targets. This happend for two reasons:

1. We made a wrong choice when it comes to the coach (Sasa Djordjevic), which we didn’t fix earlier. If we had fixed it earlier, it is quite possible that we would have a different ending in Europe as well as in the Greek championship.

2. I wasn’t expecting that Olympiacos would do so much work on matters that had to do with what is going on outside the court. As a result I left the team unprotected to the appetites of the commando-referees. Now this has become a lesson for me.

What happened last night wasn’t just a punch on the stomach, but a kick in the balls. However the strong have learned to stand up and fight. That’s what we shall do”.
