After 213 games with Gran Canaria and a EuroCup title, Jaka Lakovic is no longer the Dreamland Gran Canaria coach.
The Slovenian coach is paying the price for a bad season, with Gran Canaria currently 15th in the Spanish League standings and missing the Basketball Champions League quarterfinals.
Per the press release: “Jaka Lakovic arrived on the island in the summer of 2022 from the German team Ratiopharm Ulm. In these almost four seasons, the Slovenian has coached a total of 213 games across the Liga Endesa, Playoffs, Copa del Rey, EuroCup, and FIBA Basketball Champions League.
During his time on the island, Lakovic led the team to victory in the 2023 BKT EuroCup, guided them to another European final, and reached the semifinals of the 2025 Copa del Rey, in addition to competing in the Liga Endesa playoffs each of the three seasons.
Over those three seasons, he guided the team to every league finals and every Copa del Rey edition, as well as reaching the European playoffs in all three consecutive years, a feat not achieved since the 2017-18 season. The Balkan coach leaves an indelible mark on the club’s history.
Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria thanks the coach for his professionalism and commitment over these four years, and wishes him the best of luck in his future professional and personal projects.
Victor Garcia will take charge of the team until the arrival of the new coach”.
