With an impressive 0-13 run in the fourth quarter, Real Madrid completely turned the tables around against Barcelona on the road and took the 91 – 86 victory in the grand “clasico” of Liga Endesa.
Xavi Pascual’s players looked almost comatose until the very last minute of the final period, were thus completely overwhelmed by the Madridistas who managed to lick their wounds after their elimination from Euroleague by taking a big, and prestigious win against their arch-rival.
Trey Thompkins probably had his best game in Real Madrid’s jersey, scoring 23 points (11 of them in the fourth period) and grabbing 7 rebounds. The double-double (19 points, 13 rebounds) by Ante Tomic, was not enough for Barcelona.
While Barcelona was the team to start the game aggressively, finishing the third quarter ahead of the score, 71 – 63 the last period of the game was to be a monologue for Real Madrid. While their opponents heavily insisted on shooting one three-pointer after the other, and not always under the best possible circumstances, the Madridistas searched for the ideal shooting choice in order to gain the lead, making it 74 – 78.
Tomic scored his first point of his team after quite some time, but a 0-5 run by the guests brought them on a position of strength. With a bit more than one minute to go, and the score 77 – 83, Barcelona had ample opportunities to make a basket that would give them a fighting chance, but even after two offensive rebounds, its players did not find target.
On the other side of the court. Thompkins delivered nothing less than the killing blow, with a dunk for the 77 – 85. Nothing that the hosts did in the last minute could change the final outcome.
