Stoudemire makes homophobic remarks during interview

Israeli website Walla asked some Winner League players if they’d have a problem with a gay teammate via small video interviews.

All of them said they wouldn’t. Well, nearly all of them. Except Amare Stoudemire.

The Hapoel Jerusalem center and six-time NBA All-Star answered that, “I’m going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner. And I’m going to drive… take a different route to the gym”, he said.

Curtis Jerrells and Travis Peterson, Stoudemire’s teammates in Hapoel had previously answered negatively to the question asked by the journalist. Maccabi Tel Aviv guard DJ Seeley said “no”, as well.

Justin Carter, of Maccabi Kiryat, commented that he wouldn’t have a problem, as long as said person “didn’t mess with him.”

Amare didn’t exactly say that he’d have a problem with a homosexual teammate, but mentioned that he’d keep his distance from him. At least off the court.

When asked if he’s joking, he told the reporter: “I mean… there’s always a truth within a joke”.

In 2012, Stouudemire was fined $50.000 for using gay slur in a Twitter direct message exchange.
