Since the end of the 2023-24 season, when he shortly returned to action with Barcelona in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and with the Spanish national team in the FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers, Ricky Rubio had gone silent on both social media and public events.

A few days ago, however, he returned with a whole social campaign related to being thankful to all the people who have accompanied him throughout the years, along the basketball journey.

With a video shared on his X account, the Spanish playmaker didn’t really clarify whether this will be the end of his iconic career, spent for almost 20 years between Europe and the NBA. In fact, it was a collection of moments with friends, family, teammates, and fans supporting him.

With a note from his agency, however, Ricky Rubio has ultimately clarified the reasons behind these posts, which have translated as well into thankful messages in the American press, too.

“This is something I’d like to make clear. This isn’t a farewell. It’s simply a thank you. It comes from my year of reflection, and I wanted to do something that’s rarely done: to thank those who have been or are important to you. But it has no other message,” he said.

“I don’t know yet what will happen with my career. That should be the next thing to think about. This is something that came to mind now, and I want to convey it now that I’m back professionally, although I’m forced to stop due to health issues.”

“Will there be an official farewell? As I said, everything is open. I might play again – why not? – or I might not, and that wouldn’t be a bad idea either. It’s something I’d like to consider in the near future.”

“For now, I just wanted to say thank you and also see how it affects me as a person, and if it gives me energy to move in one direction or another,” Ricky Rubio ultimately commented.
