American point guard David DeJulius officially became a Slovak citizen on Monday, marking a significant reinforcement for the men’s national basketball team ahead of resuming action in the Pre-Qualifiers of EuroBasket 2029.

At the Client Center of the District Office in Bratislava, the 26-year-old Detroit native signed his decree of citizenship, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity.

“First of all, I am grateful to be able to represent a great country like Slovakia. Everyone welcomed me with open arms. I am excited to represent this country, its great people, and our team,” he said.

Known for his defensive tenacity and playmaking, his selection was the product of an extensive search and joint efforts between the coaching staff and the Slovak Basketball Association. Currently a UCAM Murcia player in Spain’s Liga Endesa and FIBA Europe Cup at the club level, his professional journey since 2023 has spanned Greece, Germany, Turkey, and a stint with EuroLeague’s Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv.

DeJulius is expected to make his international debut as a naturalized player for Slovakia on February 27 in Kosovo, followed by a match against Albania on March 2. Slovakia is currently tied with Kosovo at 1-0 in their three-team group, with Albania trailing at 0-2.

His arrival marks a strategic effort by the SBA to elevate national team competitiveness and secure qualification for major tournaments. The addition of a high-caliber guard like DeJulius is a vital step in strengthening the roster and achieving long-term success on the international stage, with sights set on the next EuroBasket.
