Great Britain Basketball confirmed on Monday that center Amari Williams will join the senior national team for the first time ahead of the upcoming EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers window.
The 23-year-old Boston Celtics man joins head coach Marc Steutel’s squad following a standout collegiate career in the United States and a rise through the NBA ranks. Though the Nottingham native is a veteran of the youth system, this selection marks his official senior international debut. Williams expressed immense pride regarding his return to the national setup after seven years away.
“When I realised this summer I would have the opportunity to join the programme I was very excited,” he said. “I’ve wanted to be involved throughout that time, but the timing has never fallen right to allow that to happen until now. I’ve got a lot of close friends on the roster so I’m excited to reconnect with them and compete for our country together.”

The announcement comes just days after the federation revealed that fellow British star Tosan Evbuomwan will also make his senior debut during this FIBA window, seven years after joining forces with Williams in the FIBA U18 European Championship. The reigning G League Finals Most Valuable Player, recently signed with EuroLeague powerhouse FC Barcelona.

Great Britain is looking to rebound following their elimination from the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers. They will begin their EuroBasket 2029 campaign in Group E of the Pre-Qualifiers, traveling to face Switzerland in Fribourg on August 27 before hosting Slovakia at Newcastle’s Vertu Arena on August 30.
