In a written statement, Italian national team coach Ettore Messina expressed his disappointment for Danilo Gallinari’s injury and also about the whole incident in the preparation game against the Netherlands.

The punch of Gallinari will keep him out of the Eurobasket and Italy will have to fight for something big without him.

As Messina said: “Unfortunately, what has happened is now in the past. It was certainly a very serious mistake because the concept of self-administered justice can’t be shared, especially when you have big responsibilities towards others. Mistakes are paid and we will pay it all together. I’m sure Danilo will learn from what happened and the next time he wears the blue jersey, he will contribute to the team”.

Gallinari simply can’t be replaced in the Italian roster and without him, it’s obvious that the hopes for Italy can’t be the same. In theory the “Azzurri” have the talent to be among the top teams of the old continent. However, since the silver Olympic medal of 2004 they don’t have any other major success to show and the current generation of players has yet to achieve anything really noteworthy.
