Sergio Scariolo was expected to return to Europe after his departure from the Toronto Raptors and his destination has been confirmed to be Segafredo Virtus Bologna, as the club announced a deal with the Italian expert.

Scariolo has been an assistant with the Toronto Raptors since 2018 under coach Nick Nurse and has even gotten a chance to lead the team when the latter was unavailable due to the COVID protocols. He coached the Raptors to a win over the Houston Rockets in late February.

He won the NBA championship with Toronto in 2019 and has won seven medals with the Spanish national team over the past decade. He has three EuroBasket and one World Cup gold under his belt. Scariolo is the only Italian coach to win both an NBA and World Cup trophies.

Scariolo’s last stint in Europe was back in the 2013-14 season with Laboral Kutxa while he had also been at the helm of Milano, Khimki, Unicaja, Real Madrid, TAU Ceramica, and Fortitudo Bologna earlier in his career.
