Valencia and Joan Penarroya parted ways, the team announced Tuesday. The Terrassa-born head coach has reached an agreement on a two-year deal with Bitci Baskonia, as reported by Eurohoops one week ago.

Per the press release: “Coach Joan Penarroya will not continue his professional relationship with Valencia Basket once the contract season for which the Catalan coach had promised to lead our men’s team has ended.

Valencia Basket Club wants to thank Joan for his work during this season and wishes him the best in his personal and sporting future.

Penarroya arrived at Valencia Basket in the summer of 2021 to take charge of our Club’s men’s team from Hereda San Pablo Burgos and has directed a total of 58 games as Taronja coach, with a balance of 38 wins and 20 losses.”

Under the guidance of the two-time Basketball Champions League champion, the 2021-22 season saw Valencia knocked out in the Semifinals of the 7DAYS EuroCup by Virtus Segafredo Bologna. The winning side went on to capture the title and thus clinch a berth in the next edition of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

At the domestic level, Baskonia overcame the homecourt advantage of third-seeded Valencia and with a couple of wins on the road eliminated the team coached by Penarroya in the Quarterfinals’ best-of-three series of the Liga Endesa Playoffs.

Penarroya, 54, was in charge of Hereda San Pablo Burgos, Baxi Manresa, and MoraBanc Andorra between 2010 and 2021, before taking over the Oranges last June.
