Panionios’ trip to Turkey for their game against Besiktas was marred by a tense incident involving local authorities and fans.
According to the Greek club, two Panionios supporters were taken into custody after being accused of making an “indecent gesture” at a time when Besiktas fans reportedly acted aggressively toward the visiting section. Their passports and mobile phones were temporarily confiscated.
The club reported that the fans were informed they would only need to give a statement and then be examined at a hospital to confirm that no police violence had occurred. Despite this, the two supporters remained at the hospital into Saturday morning.
The Greek Consulate became involved in the situation, as did Panionios president Panagiotis Iliadis, who requested that all necessary measures be taken to ensure the fans’ safe release and the resolution of the matter.
In response to the incident, Panionios is expected to file an official complaint with the EuroLeague. The club had already been considering submitting a report since Friday night, and the events involving the two fans reinforced the decision to seek an official investigation into the handling of the situation.
