BC Roma SPQR are reportedly considering former NBA Coach of the Year Dwane Casey as a candidate for their head coaching position ahead of the club’s inaugural campaign.
According to Marc Stein, the Detroit Pistons senior adviser has emerged as one of the leading options, while the Rome-based club is also evaluating several European coaching candidates before making a final decision.
Casey, 69, has served as the Pistons’ senior adviser to basketball operations since stepping away from coaching in 2023. During his NBA career, he was the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Toronto Raptors and Pistons, earning the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2018 after guiding Toronto to a franchise-record 59-win regular season.
The veteran coach also shares history with BC Roma SPQR co-founder Donnie Nelson, having spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Casey was part of the coaching staff that helped Dallas win the 2011 NBA championship during Nelson’s tenure in the front office.
BC Roma SPQR were created following the acquisition of Vanoli Cremona, with the franchise relocating to Rome ahead of the 2026-27 season. The ownership group includes former Mavericks executive Donnie Nelson, Luka Dončić, former Lithuanian international Rimantas Kaukenas and veteran Italian coach Valerio Bianchini.
The club is set to compete in Italy’s Serie A and the EuroCup in its debut season while also positioning itself as a candidate for the planned NBA Europe competition.
