The newly formed Roma SPQR continues a search for a head coach ahead of its debut in the BKT EuroCup and Italy’s LBA UnipolSai for the upcoming 2026–27 season.
Co-founded by former Dallas Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson and NBA superstar Luka Doncic, the Rome-based franchise is positioning itself as a premier candidate for a rumored NBA Europe initiative slated for 2027–28. To match these lofty ambitions, the front office has reportedly narrowed its coaching search to three high-profile candidates with deep ties to both European and American basketball.
Veteran tactician Dwane Casey had already emerged as a leading contender for the position. The 69-year-old former NBA Coach of the Year currently serves as a senior adviser for the Detroit Pistons but seems to be considering a return to the sidelines. He shares a championship history with Nelson from their time together with the Mavericks, making him a seamless cultural fit to guide the startup franchise.
Also in the running is former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts, according to The Stein Line on Wednesday. Recently an assistant for the Golden State Warriors and also part of the Mavs championship run, the Iowa native brings 13 seasons of NBA head coaching experience and a proven track record of maximizing elite guard play. Having played professionally overseas in Italy, Spain, and France, Stotts offers a unique blend of continental familiarity and American tactical execution.
Rounding out the reported shortlist is 39-year-old Italian native Riccardo Fois, currently an assistant coach for the champions New York Knicks. He is highly regarded for his analytics expertise and player development skills, and viewed as the ideal bridge between European regulations and NBA-style operations.
