Newly established BC Roma, initially named Roma SPQR, is laying the groundwork for a major long-term project.

With top-tier action back in the Italian capital, legendary Valerio Bianchini is heavily involved in the project, which is supported by NBA superstar Luka Doncic. Roma has launched their first-ever campaign in the BKT EuroCup and Italy’s Serie A SisalClub.

Speaking to La Repubblica in an interview posted Friday, 83-year-old Bianchini emphasized that the venture is built to last. “EuroLeague or NBA, it would make no difference,” he stressed regarding Roma’s continental projections.

“Sports require major investment,” he expanded on the modern financial realities. “True professionalism generates profit, not debt. The NBA is expanding into Europe because the EuroLeague is facing a crisis and clubs are struggling to balance their books.”

A primary driver behind this initiative is Doncic. He acts as an active investor and a core piece of the organization’s identity. “He is Slovenian and understands what it means to play on this side of the Atlantic, to play with your heart and soul,” Bianchini highlighted this unique bond.

Naturally, this collaboration brings immense global attention and credibility, while confirming that the project has serious international backing.

On the court, the team coached by Alessandro Magro has had a balanced start to its inaugural 2026–27 campaign. They hold a 1–1 record in Group D of the EuroCup Regular Season. They have achieved the exact same 1–1 standing in Italy’s Regular Season.

This steady opening sets the stage for a massive matchup this coming Sunday against cross-town rivals Maxima Roma. It marks the city’s first top-tier derby in decades, generating significant local excitement.
