Partizan Belgrade is close to hiring Andrea Trinchieri as the team’s new head coach, according to Sporski Zurnal. Trinchieri is the Serbian club’s s no. 1 target to replace former head coach Nenad Canak who resigned Friday (26/10) following the team’s fifth defeat in a row in all competitions, an ABA League 85 – 95 home loss to Zadar.

Per the report by Sporski Zurnal, Trinchieri’s talks with Partizan should intensify on Saturday and the coach is expected to sign on Monday.

Trinchieri had been without a team since he parted ways with German club Brose Bamberg last February. During summer, Trinchieri was reported to be in talks with the Toronto Raptors that were searching for a European coach to add to their staff as an assistant. The Raptors ultimately hired another Italian coach, Sergio Scariolo.

If the deal is finalized, Trinchieri will return to EuroCup, the competition in which he was named Coach of the Year in 2014, when he led Unics Kazan to the Finals. He last coached in EuroCup with Brose Bamberg in 2014-2015. Since then he competed with the German team in EuroLeague, apart from the BBL.
