Confined due to the coronavirus pandemic, Georgios Bartzokas discussed several topics with Spanish magazine FullBasket including his experience regarding coaching leading players. The Olympiacos head coach was asked about managing Vassilis Spanoulis, Juan Carlos Navarro, and Alexey Shved.

“I have been learning over the years. Surely, I won’t repeat past mistakes,” he admitted adding, “These players have a strong personality and they are the best.”

“I have never seen a leader like Spanoulis. That is my view,” he pointed out, “I only coached Navarro towards the end of his career. Shved surprised me. He brings the opposite compared to presumptions, understands circumstances like few others.”

Bartzokas’ list of accomplishments features leading Olympiacos to the EuroLeague title in 2013, during his first stint with the Reds. He became the first Greek head coach on top of Europe’s premier club competition.

“Winning a title is always a success. Depends on the team though,” he mentioned defining success, “As coaches, we can only control day-by-day player improvement. If you feel better by the end of the training session, then we did our job well.”
