In an unexpected turn of events, coach Dimitris Priftis, GM and EuroLeague legend Dimitris Diamantidis and technical director Nikos Pappas are fired by Panathinaikos. Co-GM and also EuroLeague legend Fragkiskos Alvertis is relieved from his duties while having the option to stay as the team manager and president Panagiotis Triantopoulos has resigned, as the club officially announced.

Former Panathinaikos coach Argiris Pedoulakis is already hired as the new technical director of the team and it remains to be seen who may end up being the new coach.

Per the official press release of the club which is reflecting the views of owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos: “Two years ago, following the owner’s decision to put the team up for sale, the management of the team was given in blank to Mr. Triantopoulos, Alvertis, and Diamantidis.

The clear goal from the beginning was for the organization to operate with a balanced budget and create a basic core of athletes and build a team for today and especially for tomorrow.

However, the financial part has been a complete failure, resulting in the owner’s burden of 3 million euros, so far.

Therefore, Mr. Dimitris Giannakopoulos accepted the resignation of Mr. Panagiotis Triantopoulos from the position of president of the team. Mr. Triantopoulos will, however, remain in his institutional position until 30/6/22 so as not to create a problem in the smooth operation of the team.”

In a long text which describes the failure of Panathinaikos at the financial level but also on the court as the team has already lost the Greek Cup and finished 13th in the Euroleague season, the addition of Argiris Pedoulakis is also officially announced.
