Messina: Players are exhausted

Olimpia Milano head coach Ettore Messina talked with Italian news outlet La Repubblica about the National Teams and the relations between EuroLeague and FIBA.

The formula needs to change and we need to cut the number of games. The first step is a meeting between clubs which pays millions of euros and players’ health must be our top priority” Messina said.

Certainly, the main problem is too many games in a calendar year.

The paradox is that today every team doesn’t immediately work with a full roster and gets players already tired before the season starts. Once the clubs reach an agreement, it is possible to talk about dates with FIBA and EuroLeague.

Messina talked about his calendar which is full.

I would go back to the big tournaments for National Teams in July, rest in August, and training camps in September. This year I got seven players from European Championship already exhausted before the season started. Datome has been out three months, Melli is tired and will be playing tired till the end of the season. When does he recover?”.
