AS Monaco is close to signing big man Daniel Theis according to SDNA. The German forward/center was being released by the Oklahoma City Thunder and is free to sign with any team after clearing waivers.
Theis was reported to also have a big offer in his hands by Panathinaikos Athens.
A key reason behind Theis’ decision appears to be the familiar presence of Monaco assistant coach Ilias Kantzouris. The latter was an assistant coach also at Brose Bamberg from 2014 to 2018 and worked with Theis for three years before the player moved from the German club to NBA with the Boston Celtics in 2017.
If the deal is finalized, then Theis will return to the EuroLeague after playing 452 NBA games from 2017-18 through January 2025. He averaged 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds in 18.8 minutes over 411 regular season appearances with the Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and the New Orleans Pelicans.
