Nigel Hayes-Davis: “The basketball Gods punished me for not giving 100%”

Nigel Hayes-Davis scored 14 points, but made just one of six threes and had four fouls. So, despite the win in Game 1 over Paris, he thinks Fenerbahce can do better.

After the final buzzer, he said, “I can’t say we performed very well, but we got what we wanted. In a five-game series, you have to treat each game like a season. Today we completed a season, we got what we wanted, and we won. Now the new season starts on Thursday, and we will focus on that. Tomorrow we will watch the game film and evaluate where we can improve”.

Speaking about improvement and echoing what his teammate Devon Hall and his coach, Sarunas Jasikevicius, said about the way the whole team performed in defense, especially during the first quarter, Hayes-Davis admitted that he should have been more aggressive, despite getting four fouls.

To be exact, he said that he got four fouls because he wasn’t aggressive enough and he hesitated: “I think I was punished for not being very aggressive. There was a ball in the middle. I hesitated for half a second, and I fouled. The basketball Gods punished me for not giving 100%. It’s hard to watch from the sidelines, especially when you’re on the court and trying to help your team in critical moments. Wade (Baldwin) made a critical shot. The whole team did a great job.”
