Peñarroya responds to Spanoulis: “I didn’t cry or look for excuses when I lost two games”

Barcelona got back into the EuroLeague Playoff series against Monaco, prevailing in Game 3 after losing the first two encounters on the road.

After the game, Monaco’s head coach Vassilis Spanoulis commented on alleged remarks from Joan Peñarroya about the “different methods” used by the French side to win the first two matches.

I read some quotes from Barcelona coach Mr. Peñarroya that we use different methods to win games. I don’t like this… If you want, you can watch the game and see who used different methods and threw elbows. We didn’t make even one bad play, not even one elbow… I don’t understand this. Maybe he wants to play some mind games… I’ve been in this sport for a lot of years, and it doesn’t work — it’s not good. We play physical, but we play very clean and very correct. Congrats to Barcelona, they deserved to win,” Spanoulis said at the postgame press conference.

Barcelona’s head coach responded, emphasizing that there had probably been a misunderstanding.

I have a lot of respect for Spanoulis, but he misunderstood my words. He can check the press conference — I never said that. That being said, I lost two games and I only congratulated my rival. I didn’t cry, look for excuses, or anything else — especially not things that aren’t true. It’s probably a mistranslation of my quote,” Peñarroya said.
