FC Bayern Munich shared a statement made by head coach Gordon Herbert regarding his new job with the senior national team of Canada.

Herbert, 66, described his current status on Friday, stating his lasting commitment to the German club.

Per the press release: “The Canadian Basketball Federation announced on Thursday that Gordon Herbert will take over as head coach of his home country’s national team in the summer of 2026. In response to the numerous inquiries regarding this matter, the 66-year-old Bayern Munich head coach has issued the following statement:

“I informed FC Bayern Basketball some time ago about the general interest from my home country. It is important to emphasize that a general agreement with Canada neither affects my current contract with Bayern nor a potential contract extension with Bayern Munich beyond the summer of 2026. Maybe the communication could have been handled better yesterday (Thursday). Regardless of that, my commitment to FC Bayern Basketball remains at 100 percent. The job in Munich is extremely fulfilling, I am treated with great respect here, and I am highly motivated to continue working with this club for as long as I am given the opportunity.

From now on, there is nothing more to say about this. My team and I, we are looking forward to Sunday’s next game in BMW Park and the start of the playoffs on May 17th in SAP Garden. There is still a lot to come here.”

His side ranked ninth in the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season and was eliminated from the Playoffs after a loss to Real Madrid in the Play-In Showdown. At the domestic level, Bayern currently leads the easyCredit BBL standings with a 21-8 record.
