Kenny Atkinson, 2024-25 NBA’s coach of the year, spoke with Spanish news outlet “Mundo Deportivo” about the influence that Pedro Martinez has had on him and every other NBA coach.
After defeating Bayern Munich, the coach of Valencia Basket humbly spoke about his kind words.
Atkinson, now head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, referred to Martínez as a professional he admires and learns from.
When asked about those comments, Martínez was quick to highlight what he believes they reveal more about the American coach than himself.
“Kenny’s words say a lot about him,” Martínez noted. “He’s an exceptional coach who has been doing things at a very high level for a very long time. The fact that he still wants to keep learning, that he believes anyone can teach him something, and that he values the work of others—this speaks volumes about his mentality and explains many of the good things about him.”
Martínez, who has known Atkinson for three decades, described him as “a charming, almost overly generous person” when it comes to giving credit to others. He stressed that, in basketball, borrowing ideas is simply part of the profession.
“We all copy,” he said with a smile. “I’ve taken many things from the United States. I’ve spent time with Mike Brown, with Jordi Fernández, with the Nets… It’s all about learning and improving, about watching what other coaches do. In the end, we all do the same.”
Despite Atkinson’s flattering remarks, Martínez made sure to downplay his own role in any perceived influence.
“I’m not a reference for anyone,” he insisted. “I just work as well as I can. I appreciate Kenny’s words, but they’re out of place. I’m not a model for anybody—least of all for NBA coaches.”
With characteristic humility, Martínez redirected the spotlight back to Atkinson, reinforcing the idea that the best coaches, regardless of where they work, are those who never stop learning.
