Golden Globe winner, multi-Oscar nominee Greek film director and avid basketball fan Yorgos Lanthimos spoke against the participation of Israeli clubs in the European competitions, including the EuroLeague.

“It’s unacceptable that Israeli teams are allowed to compete in European championships. I came to state this. And support the team [Olympiacos] of course,” Lanthimos said to ANT1 TV,  moments before entering Peace and Friendship arena for the EuroLeague game between Olympiacos and Maccbi Tel Aviv Tuesday (20/1).

Before embarking on a filmmaking career, Lanthimos had a very brief stint as a professional basketball player in his native Greece. He remains a big hoops fan and often attends the games of his favorite club Olympiacos at Piraeus.
