There is much discussion about the future of basketball in Europe and the potential collaboration between the EuroLeague and the NBA, which is now mentioned even by Adam Silver himself.
The scheduled board of governors meeting was held, after which Adam Silver, the NBA Commissioner, presented the key points to the public.
While the big news for the US is the expansion plans of the NBA, Silver openly said that moving together with the EuroLeague might be the best way for the NBA’s plans in Europe.
As he stated, mentioning the new EuroLeague CEO Chus Bueno: “Chus used to be a colleague of mine at the NBA for many years. I think for the better of European basketball, the best outcome would be if we come together with the EuroLeague. And we came up with a systematic approach to growing the game throughout Europe. And that means complementing the country leagues, working together with the EuroLeague, and with the FIBA”.
Silver also said there was an update provided by Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum on NBA Europe during the Board of Governors, but nothing more, adding again that there has been “enormous enthusiasm” for the project.
On the expansion talks in the US, there was a vote which approved the plans with Silver adding: “Today’s vote reflects our Board’s interest in exploring potential expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle — two markets with a long history of support for NBA basketball. We look forward to taking this next step and engaging with interested parties.”
