An official prosecutor’s investigation has been launched in Athens following a highly publicized physical and verbal altercation between billionaire shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis and former government official Grigoris Dimitriadis.
The incident took place on Sunday, at the Telekom Center Athens, shortly before tipoff of the championship game of the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four, presented by Etihad, Olympiacos and Real Madrid. The confrontation escalated, requiring immediate intervention from personal security personnel to separate them. During the scuffle, Marinakis’s shirt was torn.
The head of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, Aristidis Koreas, issued an urgent order to the Department for Tackling Sports Venue Violence to investigate the matter. Authorities are currently reviewing extensive video footage circulating online to determine if the altercation constitutes a violation of sports-related criminal law.
This incident has drawn massive public attention due to the stature of the individuals involved. Marinakis is a prominent sports executive who owns Olympiacos FC and the English Premier League club Nottingham Forest. Dimitriadis is a powerful political figure and the nephew of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, having previously served as his chief of staff.
The legal fallout comes amid a strict stance by the Greek government on sports-related violence, with the Ministry of Justice confirming that severe penalties apply to stadium incidents.
Olympiacos went on to claim the EuroLeague championship title for the fourth time in team history, marking a monumental triumph that electrified the red fans.
