Real Madrid is reportedly preparing significant changes in its basketball operations following its first season without a trophy since 2010.
According to reports from Encestando, later confirmed by MARCA, Juan Carlos Sánchez is expected to return to a leading role in the club’s basketball section. The veteran executive left his position as sporting director in 2025 but remained with the organization as an advisor to club president Florentino Pérez.
His return could have major consequences for Sergio Rodríguez, who has overseen the basketball department this season. While both Rodríguez and former Real Madrid player Martynas Pocius remain under contract, reports suggest that, if they stay with the club, their responsibilities could be reduced.
The shake-up comes after a disappointing campaign in which Real Madrid reached the EuroLeague Final Four but failed to win a title. The season ended on a sour note when Sergio Scariolo’s team was eliminated by La Laguna Tenerife in the ACB quarterfinals, marking the club’s first failure to reach the league semifinals in 18 years.
Despite the disappointing finish, Scariolo is expected to remain in charge next season, although changes to his coaching staff are reportedly being considered.
