CSKA could potentially return to the EuroLeague for the 2027-28 season, as reported by Russia’s Match TV on Wednesday.
Confirming a plan for the Moscow outfit to re-enter Europe’s premier club competition, the update underlines that no formal restrictions exist to prevent their participation during that cycle.
The legendary club, which captured eight continental championships and secured 18 Final Four appearances since the turn of the century, has been barred from on-court action since February 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During this ongoing suspension, the team has continued to compete domestically in the VTB United League while maintaining a vital role off the court as a lasting stakeholder and shareholder in EuroLeague Basketball.
The initial decision to sideline the Russian powerhouse complied with recommendations from the International Olympic Committee. Because those broad athletic guidelines have shifted with the IOC recently provisionally lifting the suspension, the club retains its legal right to request competitive reinstatement.
Internal politics have presented another obstacle, as other Euroleague Basketball members were deeply divided on welcoming Russian organizations back into the fold.
Significant logistical hurdles remain, as home games inside Russia are likely to be strictly prohibited. To circumvent this geographic restriction, officials are exploring neutral alternative venues, with Serbia and Turkiye emerging as the primary options to host designated home matchups.
While administrative status secures their seat at the table, geopolitical friction and split institutional opinions mean that navigating the path back to the EuroLeague is bound to be highly complex.
