Valencia is restructuring its coaching staff ahead of the upcoming 2026–27 season, fulfilling two primary requests from newly appointed head coach Xavi Albert. According to a report from COPE on Tuesday, the EuroLeague club has finalized agreements to bring in experienced play-caller Israel Gonzalez and former staff member Javi Vilaplana, while ensuring the continuity of veteran assistant Joan Maroto.
Gonzalez represents a high-caliber addition to the bench. The 51-year-old Cantabrian brings significant top-tier experience, having previously served as the head coach for ALBA Berlin in 129 EuroLeague games, where he secured a domestic double by winning both the easyCredit BBL and the BBL-Pokal in Germany during the 2021–22 season. Known for a fast-paced, high-possession style that heavily emphasizes three-point shooting and rapid player rotations, he aligns perfectly with the tactical identity the Taronges intends to employ. Following a brief stint with Trieste in the 2025–26 season, he joins Albert’s staff as the top assistant.
Returning to the organization to oversee player development and video analysis is Vilaplana, coming off a head-coaching spell with Lliria. Also, Maroto enters his 13th consecutive season with the club, having previously served under the five previous head coaches. Amid an incredibly demanding regional and European schedule for the 2026–27 season, the front office has not ruled out adding one more piece to the bench to further distribute the workload.
Albert, a 39-year-old former assistant to Pedro Martinez, was promoted to head coach after the previous manager left to take over Real Madrid.
