Aleksander Sekulic officially takes over as Barcelona’s new head coach

Confirming a deal with Aleksander Sekulic, FC Barcelona named the 48-year-old play-caller as the new head coach on Wednesday.

Per the press release: “The new Barça basketball coach is set to be Aleksander Sekulic, as FC Barcelona and Sekulic have reached agreement for the Slovenian coach to take over the reins for the blaugranes. The 48-year-old coach is set to sign a contract until 30 June 2028 and will become the first Slovenian coach in the history of the Barça basketball team.

The new blaugrana coach will be officially presented and sign his contract in the coming days.

He will join the Club after coaching Dubai BC during the final months of last season. With the Emirates team, he made his debut in the EuroLeague in the final match of the regular phase against Valencia Basket and led the club to be crowned ABA League champions for the first time in their history after defeating Partizan Belgrade in the fourth game of the final.

Career as a coach

Sekulic begin his coaching career at different clubs in his home country, gaining extensive experience as assistant coach and head coach. In the 2021/22 season, he took charge of Czechia team ERA Nymburk, taking them to a league title win. He then moved to Russia in 2022, coaching Lokomotiv Kuban for two seasons (2022-24). The 2025/26 season saw him take charge of Zenit Saint Petersburg, where he remained until he left for Dubai in April.

Coaching experience and track record

The new blaugrana coach is the current Slovenian coach, a role he has had since 2020. Sekulic helped the national team qualify for the Olympic Games for the first time in their history, when they reached in the semi-finals in Tokyo and finished in a commendable fourth position in summer 2021. He was also the assistant coach for his national team when they were crowned Eurobasket champions in 2017.”
