Jonas Valanciunas made an immediate impact in his first appearance for Zalgiris Kaunas, powering the Lithuanian champions to a 97-85 preseason victory over Rigas Zelli.

The 34-year-old controlled the paint throughout his brief spell on the floor. In only 19 minutes, he collected 20 points and nine rebounds, four of them offensive, while converting seven of his 10 two-point attempts and six of seven free throws.

Valanciunas received plenty of support from the rest of the roster. Sterling Brown scored 14 points, with Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, Marius Grigonis and Carsen Edwards contributing 13 each.

Martynas Varnas finished as Rigas Zelli’s leading scorer with 17 points, but his performance was not enough to spoil an encouraging first outing for Valanciunas and Zalgiris.
