Giannoulis Larentzakis is getting closer to a return to AEK, with the Greek international guard currently in talks with Olympiacos over a potential release from his contract.
Larentzakis is still under contract with Olympiacos for the upcoming season, but his representatives are negotiating with the EuroLeague champions in an effort to reach an agreement that would allow the 32-year-old to become a free agent and clear the way for a move to AEK.
The discussions are expected to be completed in the coming days, with Larentzakis increasingly likely to return to the club where he made a name for himself before leaving seven years ago.
The Greek guard departed AEK in 2019 for Spain, joining UCAM Murcia, before eventually making the move to Olympiacos, where he has spent the past several seasons.
As negotiations between Larentzakis and Olympiacos continue, the player was left out of the team’s trip to Crete for the upcoming basketball tournament in which the Piraeus club will participate.
George Papas emerging as potential replacement
Should Larentzakis officially leave Olympiacos, George Papas could emerge as his replacement in the Greek champions’ rotation.
Papas is already taking part in Olympiacos’ preseason preparations and featured in the team’s recent friendly against Promitheas Patras. He made an immediate impression, finishing as Olympiacos’ leading scorer in the game.
The coaching staff are seriously considering keeping Papas as part of the roster, both to strengthen the team’s Greek contingent and because of the positive performances he has delivered during preseason.
Papas is a familiar face to Olympiacos, having previously spent time with the club, and his current form has strengthened his case for a return to the team on a more permanent basis.
