Barcelona have started the 2026-27 season with a new trophy in the cabinet, but their Catalan League triumph came at a bitter cost.
The Catalan side defeated iLERNA Lleida in the final to lift the Lliga Catalana title, but the celebrations were overshadowed by a worrying injury to Darío Brizuela.
The Barça guard was forced to leave the court after suffering an injury following a fall. Initial concerns point towards a possible Achilles tendon injury, although an ankle sprain has also been mentioned as a potential diagnosis. The exact extent of the injury is yet to be determined, but the incident immediately raised fears of a potentially serious setback for one of Barcelona’s key players.
Even before playing a single Liga Endesa or EuroLeague game, Barça has already seen three players sidelined by injury: Yoan Makoundou will be out for six weeks with a knee injury, while Tosan Evbuomwan returned from international duty injured and will be sidelined for three weeks due to a shoulder subluxation.
Brizuela’s injury cast a shadow over what should have been a positive day for Barça. The team had to fight back after trailing for much of the first half, going into the break 40-44 down. They eventually found their rhythm and produced a strong second-half performance to turn the game around and secure the title.
Joel Parra led the way with 21 points, while Myles Norris Robinson added 19 and Kevin Punter contributed 14. Their offensive production proved decisive as Barcelona found different ways to hurt Lleida and eventually took control of the final.
For Lleida, Darius McGhee was the team’s leading scorer with 18 points, followed by Zach Perrin, who finished with 16.
