After a summer of uncertainty, during which ASVEL was forced to scale back its ambitious project and rebuild the roster, Tony Parker’s team could hardly have asked for a better start to the EuroLeague season.
Preparations ended with a disappointing defeat to Roanne in the SuperCup semifinals, but ASVEL responded by beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 84-74 and giving Parker his first official victory as the club’s head coach.
Parker welcomed the result but stressed that it represented only the beginning of a much longer process.
“It is great to get my first win, but it is only one victory,” Parker told EuroLeague TV. “For our confidence, it is good to start this way.”
ASVEL still had problems creating offense in the half court, but compensated with its defensive effort, rebounding and energy. Parker was particularly pleased with the character displayed by his newly assembled team.
“We showed character even though we are not ready yet. There are many things we can improve offensively, but there are other ways to win games – effort, energy, rebounding and defense. You do not need to have played together for a long time to do those things.”
The victory was also an immediate response to the setback against Roanne, something Parker highlighted after the game.
“I am very happy for the players. We suffered a painful loss against Roanne on Saturday, but they have worked hard since then and I loved their reaction.”
