Maccabi sacking Bagatskis

Following the defeat by Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv is going to sack head coach Ainars Bagatskis.

As Israeli website Walla reported, Maccabi management reached this decision not long after the new disappointing result that dropped them to the third spot of the Israeli League standings.

Zvi Sherf, Sharon Drucker and Arik Shivek are considered as favorites to replace the Latvian coach with the goal of the “Yellows” being to find someone that will agree to sign for no longer than the remainder of the season.

If none of them agree to that condition, then the team will proceed with assistant Lior Lubin as head coach. Maccabi will look for a rather different solution for the next season with Sarunas Jasikevicious reportedly having already received a multiyear offer.

This year has been nothing less than disappointing for Maccabi and not only because of their elimination from the EuroLeague playoffs. The loss to Haifa has been the fifth consecutive in the Israeli League and the eighth in a row including games of all competitions. It’s defeat no. 31 in the season and 13th at home.

It’s not surprising that drastic measures are to be taken, in order to create a necessary “shock” that might steer the team to a positive direction.
