As the Spanish basketball federation (FEB) announced, Serge Ibaka will not play in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.

According to the joined press release of the federation and the player: “After several discussions in recent weeks between coach Sergio Scariolo and Serge Ibaka, aimed at assessing his inclusion in the pre-selection for the Olympic Games, and after reaching the conclusion that, as a result of a long and intense season the player is not one hundred percent ready physically, the FEB and the Spanish international playerhave taken the mututal decision to not include him in the squad.

The two sides consider this to be the best decision for both the player and the team.

Ibaka and FEB want to state on the record that despite his absence this summer, Serge is and will be part of the group of the national team, he contributed in its previous triumphs and this summer he will encourage and support from a distance his peers as a fan”.

This decision leaves the naturalized player position in the Spanish national team open for Nikola Mirotic.
