The Italian national team didn’t manage to qualify in the Olympic Games, losing in the Final of the qualifying tournament against Croatia. But that is not the end of its problems.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, there is “little hope” for Ettore Messina to continue as head coach of Italy. His continuing obligations with the San Antonio Spurs is an obstacle for the renewal of his contract with the Italian Basketball Federation that is already considering Messina’s replacement.

Right now there are three names which are higher in the list of the possible candidates to become the new head coach of the “Azzurri”: Andrea Trinchieri, Romeo Saccheti and Pino Sacripanti. The latter seems to the favorite among them since he is Messina’s to pick as well. Not a surprise, since Sacripanti is the coach of the Italian U20 national team right now having led them to multiple successes in the past, the most recent one being the gold medal in the 2013 European championship.
