FIBA has informed the federations of the countries that would participate in the U18 European Championship in Samsun, Turkey that the competition has been postponed indefinitely.

Here is the letter sent to the Federations informing about the FIBA’s decision:

“The FIBA Europe Executive Committee has decided on Friday to postpone indefinitely the FIBA U18 European Championship 2016 which was due to take place in Samsun, Turkey from 30 July – 7 August.

The Committee took into consideration the current situation in Turkey and correspondence it has received by several National Federations, expressing their deep concerns about participating in the tournament, following apprehension from the parents of the players, who are still minors.

The Committee has tasked the Secretariat of FIBA Europe to explore options to play the tournament either at the end of the calendar year 2016 or at the beginning of 2017 at the latest. The eligibility of the current national team members will not be affected.

The Committee has also reiterated its support to the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) who has repeatedly, as well as on this occasion, shown a great degree of competence and excellent organisational skills.”
