FIBA opens youth window for Russia and Belarus amid senior bans

In addition to awarding hosting rights for the FIBA Women’s World Cup 2030 and Men’s World Cup 2031 to Japan and France, the FIBA Central Board recently opened a narrow competitive window for junior athletes from Russia and Belarus, marking a shift in its stance toward their participation in international tournaments.

By issuing an exceptional authorization, the governing body cleared both Russia and Belarus to register U21 teams for specific conferences of the FIBA 3×3 Youth Nations League in China and Malaysia. This represents their first return to international play since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, aligning with International Olympic Committee recommendations to ease restrictions for younger competitors. Furthermore, the Central Board approved preserving the updated status for junior players across all other competitions, including the Youth EuroBaskets 2026, until the next Executive Committee meeting in September.

However, this youth-focused update does not signal a total lifting of sanctions. During its first meeting of 2026 in Berlin, alongside the FIBA Hall of Fame 2026 induction ceremony and the draw for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026, the Central Board left the existing restrictions unchanged, confirming that the general suspension of senior national teams and clubs remains the status quo. Therefore, both nations remain excluded from major senior tournaments, including the FIBA World Cup 2027 Qualifiers. Russian and Belarusian clubs also stay barred from all FIBA-sanctioned European leagues. This decision ensures both programs remain isolated while upcoming events proceed with the established field of international competitors.
