FIBA’s conflict with Euroleague was on the agenda of the European Union Sports Minister Meeting, which took place in Brussels. All parts mentioned the need to protect the national teams and for a solution to be reached.

The Greek Minister mentioned during the meeting: “I would like to address the issue of FIBA and Euroleague, which will affect the whole of the European sporting heritage. We need to take a stand and take action on this. We can not legislate, but we can intervene. We need to start a dialogue on our own initiative to solve the problem. We are the ones who have to take the initiative, not to solve it, but to put the two sides at the same table for the benefit of European sporting construction.”

Laura Flessel, French Minister of Sport added: “It is difficult to admit that only a few teams share the titles and the proceeds of the games, we have to break this glass roof, it is important to maintain the European pyramid sports system”.

Maja Makovec, Slovenian Minister of Sport also agreed: “All parties involved should bend over this aspect of the problem, not just the Commission, we ministers, but also the International Olympic Committee and the national unions. We have to work hand in hand. We have to invest mainly in development: there would never be players like Luka Doncić or Goran Dragic if there was no national education system.”
