Victor Wembanyama, just drafted number 1 in the NBA by the Spurs, will not take part in the summer campaign of the France team, which must play the World Cup in Indonesia and the Philippines, from August 25 to September 10.

He described to “L’Équipe” his decision as “difficult”, but “irrevocable”, during an interview.

As he said: “It would not be realistic in terms of development and not prudent in terms of health. I hope people will understand. It’s frustrating for me too. The France team is still central for me. I want to win as many titles as possible with the team. But I think it’s a necessary sacrifice”.

France is expected to qualify as hosts for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, France, where Wembanyama is expected to play.

Just a few days ago in his pre-draft media availability, Wembanyama has stated that his intention was to play both in the summer league and the FIBA World Cup but things have changed.

His absence is a huge blow for the French national team and also for the prestige of the tournament.
