Legendary Spanish star Pau Gasol has been appointed Global Ambassador for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, continuing his role from the 2022 edition in Sydney.

A FIBA Hall of Fame inductee and 2006 FIBA World Cup MVP, Gasol will use his status to promote the tournament and support the global growth of women’s basketball. He becomes the second icon to take on the role, following USA legend Sue Bird.

This World Cup will reflect the extraordinary growth that women’s basketball is experiencing worldwide,” Gasol said. “The talent, competitiveness, and global interest continue to rise, and this tournament will be another important step forward for the sport.

Gasol played in three FIBA World Cups for Spain, winning the 2006 edition in Japan and earning MVP honors, and remains one of the most decorated EuroBasket players in history. Since retiring, he has focused on sport, health, and youth initiatives.

The 2026 Women’s Basketball World Cup runs September 4-13 across Arena Berlin and Max-Schmeling Halle, featuring 16 teams.
