Rising prodigy Hugo Gonzalez highlights Spain’s 14-player roster selected by coach Chus Mateo for the upcoming FIBA window to resume action in the World Cup 2027 Qualifiers.
The roster announced by the Spanish Basketball Federation on Thursday blends youth and experience, featuring veterans Willy Hernangomez, Pierre Oriola, and Ferran Bassas alongside younger stars like Izan Almansa, Alvaro Cardenas, and Mario Saint-Supery.
Despite already clinching a spot in the final qualification round with a 4–0 record, Spain faces critical upcoming games against Denmark and Georgia. The results carry over into Group I this August, making these matches essential for the road to Qatar.
Coach Mateo intends to use this opportunity to integrate the Real Madrid product into high-leverage rotations, alongside backcourt players Dario Brizuela, Francis Alonso, and Alberto Diaz. The squad’s depth is supported by frontcourt and wing players Joel Parra, Oriol Pauli, Jaime Pradilla, and Santi Yusta.

These matches provide a platform for 20-year-old Gonzalez to showcase his athleticism and defensive versatility, testing his abilities in competitive, physical European environments. The goal is to solidify his transition from a prospect to an immediate, impactful contributor as Spain maintains its momentum ahead of a grueling summer schedule.
Taking his talents to North America as the 28th pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, he earned meaningful minutes during his rookie season with the Celtics, averaging 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds across 74 games in the 2025-26 Regular Season, before falling out of the rotation in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google.
This standard followed his impressive senior national team entrance during the EuroBasket 2025 Qualifiers, where he debuted with 10.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
