Nearly two years after his last appearance for France, Victor Wembanyama is preparing to return to international action during the August window.
Wembanyama last represented Les Bleus in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games, recording 26 points and seven rebounds in the loss to the United States. After missing EuroBasket 2025, the 22-year-old will rejoin France as an NBA All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year.
While attending the inauguration of a renovated basketball court in Nanterre, where he spent eight years developing as a player, Wembanyama expressed his excitement about being back home and playing under FIBA rules again.
“Coming back here does my heart a lot of good,” Wembanyama said, per BasketUSA. “I don’t miss the NBA at the moment, but I do miss FIBA.”
The Spurs center returned to France following a demanding NBA season that ended in mid-June with a loss in the Finals.
“It’s sometimes difficult to maintain those connections with France every day when you spend so many months across the Atlantic,” he added. “But when I come back here, nothing could be easier because these are people I know and trust. Growing up in Nanterre and in France in general, I was surrounded almost exclusively by good people.”
Wembanyama will soon organize the second edition of his basketball and chess tournament in Nanterre before joining the French national team.
France will play four games in August, beginning with two friendly matchups against Serbia on August 20 and 23. Les Bleus will then open the 2027 World Cup Qualifiers against Slovenia on August 27 before visiting Sweden three days later.
